Another one of Vancouver’s most beloved Halloween attractions is the ever popular Stanley Park Ghost Train. The train runs every evening from the 5th of October until Halloween night, from 6 until 10pm. The cost is CDN$11 per person, and matinees are available on select days for $5 per person.
This years theme for the Ghost train is “Scary Fairy Tales,” which showcases an alternate, dark, and very unhappy ending to some of the most popular fairy tales. Nothing like seeing Snow White and her zombie dwarves dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” a rather chunky Hansel and Gretel after devouring most of the witch’s gingerbread house, a scar-faced evil queen looking at her mirror in despair, a stilt-walking old hag offering poisoned apples to the train riders, Rapunzel’s mummified body waiting to be rescued up in her tower, or an upside down version of “The Princess and the Pea.” May they all live Happily nEver After.
While the Ghost Train has its low points (for the amount of money they charge, and the many years it’s been running, they could definitely invest a little more into their props!), the ride has quite a few chuckles, many not-so-scary moments (this is a family event, after all) and continues to be one of my favourite Halloween-time attractions in the city. The mini-train ride alone in the darkness of the park is entertaining enough on its own!
The finale of this year’s performance, featuring a life-size dragon (….yes, I just said life-size dragon) waking from its slumber to defend its golden eggs as a Jack – from Beanstalk fame – tries to steal them, is visually outstanding and worth the ride!
Only two more days left to go visit this year’s Stanley Park Ghost Train, before the last ride takes off for the season on the 31st of October!
