This month, I also visited another great Halloween attraction for the first time: the Dunbar Haunted House, which this year celebrated its 8th year running. This year also marked the first year in which the haunt was hosted in a new location; ironically, the new location is no longer in Dunbar St, but in Shaughnessy St.
Started in 2004 as a small family-run event to entertain people in the community, the Dunbar Haunted House has grown up immensely in both popularity and size. This family-run event is put together by two private families, and features thousands of dollars worth of costumes and props which will impress even the pickiest Halloween-lovers.
Impressively, 100% of proceeds from the event are donated to three local charities in Vancouver – the families who run the haunt do so not for profit, but for the love of Halloween. Tickets are CDN $10 for adults from 7pm until closing, and a $5 unlimited-access pass can be purchased for $5 from 1pm to 7pm on weekends. Make sure to bring cash, as this is a cash-only event.
The move to the new location was in response to the haunt’s popularity. Last year alone they had over 13,000 visitors and 150 volunteers. That year, the Dunbar Haunted House raised CDN$60,000. Despite its new location this year, the haunt’s popularity will no doubt continue to increase over the coming years.
This year’s theme is ‘The Daily Grime,” featuring common newspaper topics and headlines about education, politics, health care, science and law & order with a dark, Halloween twist. No cheap thrills here, the state of the art props will have your heart pumping from beginning to end!
Ready to be scared out of your mind? Visit the Dunbar Haunted House before the 31st of October 2012, at their new location at:
